CPAs may help you with management issues in your company (as a Comptroller or Chief Financial Officer), audit your financial statements for loan purposes (Auditor), or help you with tax planning. An income statement shows a detailed account of income and expenses for a fixed period of time. A balance sheet includes the assets and liabilities at a particular time. Individuals, properties, and businesses all have their own financial statements.\n<p class=\"backtotop\"><a href=\"#resources\">Back to Top<\/a><\/p>\n<h4 id=\"14\"><strong>Intellectual Property<\/strong><\/h4>\nAn original creative work, such as an invention, a product or a company brand, that is tangible and can be protected by a patent, trademark or copyright. \n<p class=\"backtotop\"><a href=\"#resources\">Back to Top<\/a><\/p>\n<h4 id=\"15\"><strong>Leverage<\/strong><\/h4>\nFinancial leverage results from using borrowed capital as a funding source when investing to expand the firm&#8217;s asset base and generate returns on risk capital. Leverage is an investment strategy of using borrowed money\u2014specifically, the use of various financial instruments or borrowed capital\u2014to increase the potential return of an investment. Leverage can also refer to the amount of debt a firm uses to finance assets. \n<p class=\"backtotop\"><a href=\"#resources\">Back to Top<\/a><\/p>\n<h4 id=\"16\"><strong>Liability<\/strong><\/h4>\nA liability is something a person or company owes, usually a sum of money. Liabilities are settled over time through the transfer of economic benefits including money, goods, or services. Liabilities takes money out of your pocket. Liabilities include items such as credit card debt, mortgages, car loans, school loans, etc. \nRecorded on the right side of the balance sheet, liabilities include loans, accounts payable, mortgages, deferred revenues, bonds, warranties, and accrued expenses. \nLiabilities can be contrasted with assets. Liabilities refer to things that you owe or have borrowed; assets are things that you own or are owed. \n<p class=\"backtotop\"><a href=\"#resources\">Back to Top<\/a><\/p>\n<h4 id=\"17\"><strong>Passive Income<\/strong><\/h4>\nIncome you receive from businesses you invest in, royalties and rental real estate investments. It is income you are not working for. \nPortfolio Income<\/strong><\/h4>\nPortfolio income is money received from investments, dividends, interest, and capital gains. Royalties received from investment property also are considered portfolio income sources. Income derived from paper assets such as stocks, bonds, mutual funds, etc. Most portfolio income gets favorable tax treatment. Dividends and capital gains are taxed at a lower rate than earned income. In addition, portfolio income is not subject to Social Security or Medicare taxes. \nIt is one of three main categories of income. The others are active income and passive income. \n<p class=\"backtotop\"><a href=\"#resources\">Back to Top<\/a><\/p>\n<h4 id=\"18\"><strong>Return on Investment (ROI)<\/strong><\/h4>\nThe amount of income you receive from an investment dividend by the total amount invested into the investment. To calculate ROI, the benefit (or return) of an investment is divided by the cost of the investment. Buckminster Fuller, the number of days you can survive without working for money, while still maintaining your same standard of living.\nWealth measures the value of all the assets of worth owned by a person, community, company, or country. Wealth is determined by taking the total market value of all physical and intangible assets owned, then subtracting all debts. Essentially, wealth is the accumulation of scarce resources. \nSpecific people, organizations, and nations are said to be wealthy when they are able to accumulate many valuable resources or goods.
